Podium Discussion

BREXIT means BREXIT, or does it?

Please join us for a podium discussion on

Thursday, September 15th, 2016 from 17:00 to 19:00 hrs
at the English Department of the University of Basel,
Nadelberg 6, Grosser Hörsaal

Participants:

  • Edwin Constable (University of Basel, Vice President for Research)
  • Jakob Dittmar (Malmö University) and Richard Stinshoff (University of Oldenburg)
  • Stefan Howald (Journalist, Zürich)
  • Mark Sanchez (Writer, Gibraltar)

Jakob Dittmar and Richard Stinshoff will give a short input on 'Brexit and the Post-Imperial Trauma of Withdrawal', and Stefan Howald will talk about the relation between social needs/interests and cultural images.

Edwin Constable will join the discussion, addressing the likely consequences of Brexit for education and research funding.

We are also very happy to welcome M. G. Sanchez from Gibraltar, author of The Escape Artist, Rock Black: Ten Gibraltarian Stories and Diary of a Victorian Colonial and Other Tales. Mark will join the discussion and has provided some preliminary reading written specially for the occasion: "Fifty years of 'Unbelonging': a personal testimony on the road to Brexit".

The podium discussion opens our conference 'In and Out of Europe – British Literary and Cultural Discourses of Europe'. For further information on the conference, see the links in the left hand column.

We are looking forward to a lively discussion!
